About Us

Registered with Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria (CAC/IT/NO. 26422), and Governed by a 9-member Board.

Since 2003, Scripture Union West Africa (SUWA) has been on the frontline of transforming lives and communities in Nigeria. We focus on equipping individuals, families, and institutions with tools to live healthy, peaceful, and empowered lives.

Our interventions span peacebuilding, gender justice, health, nutrition, livelihood empowerment, and humanitarian response.

From HIV/AIDS prevention and support for orphans to fostering entrepreneurship and promoting environmental awareness, SUWA believes in holistic, community-led transformation.

Our Peacebuilding approach encourages community members to take ownership of peacebuilding efforts, promoting a sense of responsibility and agency.

Our Impact Report

1. Reducing Violence and Improving Livelihoods

- A project in our project location has reduced intimate partner violence, with 65% of self-help group members reporting a decrease in violence. - The project also improved economic stability, with 70% of self-help group members reporting increased income. - Additionally, the project contributed to a change in beliefs and perceptions regarding SGBV and FGM, with an increase in parents aiming to save their daughters from FGM.

2. Psychological Impact and Mental Health

- SGBV projects have also focused on addressing the psychological impact of violence, providing trauma-informed mental health services and promoting healing and empowerment for survivors. - Experts emphasize the need for a multi-sectoral approach, including policy enforcement, awareness and advocacy, capacity building, and access to services to address the mental health needs of SGBV survivors.

3. Access to Justice and Support

- Projects have also worked to strengthen police and judiciary responses to SGBV, our partnership with FIDA providing training and support to ensure perpetrators are held accountable and survivors receive the support they need. - Our project aimed to end impunity for SGBV perpetrators and support survivors through improved police and judiciary responses. - SUWA have provided aid to survivors to pursue justice in court.

4. Community Engagement and Empowerment

- SUWA SGBV projects have also engaged communities in prevention efforts, working with men and boys to promote gender equality and challenge toxic masculinity. - Economic empowerment initiatives have also been used to support survivors, providing skills training and financial support to help them rebuild their lives.

5. Strengthened Social Cohesion

SUWA work in communities of project implementation has brought together different groups within a community, helping to break down stereotypes and build understanding. This is achieved through initiatives like community-listening, mixed groups for sports, livelihood VSLA, or community projects, and peace education.

6. Empowered Women and Youth

Our efforts often focus on empowering women and youth, enabling them to play a more significant role in promoting peace and security. This includes providing training, resources, and support to help them become mediators and peacebuilders in their communities.

7. Improved Conflict Resolution

SUWA establish community conflict dispute resolution centers through the action commitee, providing a platform for resolving disputes through mediation, arbitration, and negotiation. This approach reduces minor conflicts and eases the burden on traditional courts.

8. Enhanced Community Trust

By providing infrastructure, tools, and resources, peacebuilding SUWA projects have build trust within communities and between communities and local governments. This trust is essential for promoting peaceful coexistence and resolving disputes.

9. Reduced Gender-Based Violence

SUWA Peacebuilding initiatives address social norms about gender, promoting positive masculinity and reducing gender-based violence. This includes working with men and boys to challenge harmful attitudes and behaviors
